Why I Stopped Colour-Correcting…

I’m coming to realize I’m probably always going to suffer scarring. Unfortunately I’ve had my fair share of pimple popping days, and I’ve lived to extremely regret it. I’ve also tried my fair share of brightening or dark spot erasing Skincare products. Granted, The Ordinary has been a huge help in that region. However, I do still find myself unable to leave the house without a base. Scars really are the worst to deal with. You find that although your skin is in great condition and you’re no longer breaking out, your face still looks acne-ridden. It’s awful! You may remember a while ago that I wrote a post comparing colour correctors and discussing how they’d been a huge help with my scarring, well I’m not so certain anymore…

Shortly after writing that post, I got the chance to try out Lancome’s Teint Idole Wear Camouflage Color Correctors and I’d fallen head over heels for them. They worked a million times better than any I’d tried before and I was set. I only needed a tiny bit to cover everything up, or so I thought. One day, I found myself dotting foundation onto my skin and realizing I had forgotten to colour correct. It was too late to go back so I went ahead without it. That’s when I realized it; my scars were less visible.

This made no sense to me. How? Whenever I apply my colour correctors I notice how clear my skin is and how well they covered them up, but the truth is that I did sometimes notice my scars still peeping through underneath my makeup. I had assumed it was just that my scars were so bad that they couldn’t be completely covered. But I noticed that my skin without colour correctors had less visible scars. I got super confused then everything came to me.
I had been struggling with dry looking patches when my makeup was on, as well as separation. I thought it was just the Primer I used but now I had realized the colour correctors were doing more harm than good. I think the colour correctors had been almost making my scars appear more grey and more visible once mixed with foundation. The foundation just did not sit nicely on top of them. Having that extra layer of product just ended up separating and drying up in the areas where I had colour corrected which worked to emphasize the areas thus emphasizing my scars.

So that is why I haven’t used a colour corrector for a month now. It saddens me because before I apply foundation I can really see a huge difference it makes and for a moment it is as if I don’t have any scarring. I’m not sure what the solution is. Should I try different colour correctors? Perhaps I’m applying too much? I really want to figure out a way to make them work under foundation.
For now, I think I’ll stick to foundation alone and live with the few scars that show through my medium coverage. Sorry for the more talkative kind of post haha, I just wanted to share my thoughts and maybe open up a discussion 🙂

I rarely colour correct. I actually don’t mind a non-flawless look…I prefer it, so that it looks like me. I don’t want to wipe foundation away and be shocked by what’s staring back at me.

I don’t have the time to color correct! It is an extra step and an extra expense that I just skip.

I’ve personally never colour corrected before. Hell, I don’t even use concealer much either (I find I generally look better without the concealer half the time.)

But this is an interesting observation, and really makes you think are these products just a gimmick?

  5. Hm I rarely color correct because if I do I feel like the problem is more noticeable. Maybe I too am doing something wrong.

I don’t usually colour correct, but it might be because of the brand? Or the formula being incompatible with your foundation? Have tried different correctors?

I also don’t particularly like colour correcting, they’re usually a bit cakey and give kind of ashy undertone. That being said, I often still use a bit of green if I get some red spots.

It’s honestly such a godsend solution to discolouration, but I just don’t know how to get it to work under foundation :/ hopefully one day I’ll be writing a post about how I’ve found the perfect colour corrector haha x

I ventured into colour correcting but I just can’t be bothered with it! Have you considered seeing a dermatologist and maybe trying something like microdermabrasion? I’ve had it done and I think it reduces the appearance of scars!

Yess I definitely have considered microdermabrasion! I’ve yet to find a clinic or salon where I am that I can trust so I’m still on the hunt -I have a feeling that’s what’s going to make the biggest difference so I need to get on it :/ x

I color correct like twice a month, lol. I love makeup to just sort of enhance my features, instead of changing them.
Loved this post. Also, your blue nail polish is so pretty! Xx

Aww thank you so much. Yeah I think sometimes sticking to enhancing ends up looking prettier rather than trying to change things and failing haha! xx
